Grading in 5th Grade Science is Like Angry Birds

h/t to Ben Sabree for bringing this blog post to my attention. Students got their first quiz back today. We spent most of class talking about how the way grading gets done in 5th grade science is like Angry Birds: you get feedback on the quality with which you attempt to meet a goal (killing pigs, learning science). You can reattempt levels/goals that you don’t do as well on as you think you can. You get better through repeated practice and help from people who know more about it than you do. It’s a first taste, and it shook some people up, but it’s a great place to begin the conversation about what grades mean and how we can get better at doing something important (or not so important as is the case with Angry Birds.)
